The Water Crisis on Our Military Bases

The water crisis on our military bases was addressed this week in Washington. Military families are reporting birth defects, Stage IV cancer and thyroid disease due to the contaminated water at the bases.
The hearing Wednesday was the first for the sub-panel under new leadership, and a reminder that the widespread concerns of per- and polyfluoroalkyl, or PFAS, contamination could come under closer scrutiny by the Democrat-led House. PFAS are also known as “forever chemicals” because of their ability to accumulate.

Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., testified the Defense Department has yet to request additional funds to address the PFAS contamination and has only acted at 32 of the sites to clean up contamination – less than 10 percent.

The state of New Mexico is suing the Air Force over widespread contamination of soil, drinking water and even milk from firefighting chemicals used on bases in Eastern and Southern New Mexico.

And in 2011, the DOD admitted the chemicals had created a “crisis,” contaminating groundwater at nearly 600 military sites nationwide.
