Is It Alzheimer's or Your Thyroid?

Alzheimer’s disease is a very scary diagnosis! If you or your parents are concerned about memory loss, you need to know that there are other medical conditions that mimic dementia.

Not surprising, thyroid issues are one of the first medical conditions mentioned, along with a Vitamin A deficiency. Many who deal with thyroid disease have problems with forgetfulness and confusion. The good news is that many times is not dementia, but another medical issue that can be addressed.

In the following article, Vicki Gerson shares the most common medical problems that are mistaken for Alzheimer’s.

In this article by Mark Fuerst, he shares the results of this 2017 survey that suggests that “approximately one-third of physicians taking care of patients with hypothyroidism are willing to prescribe therapies other than levothyroxine (LT4),” stated the authors, led by Jacqueline Jonklaas, M.D., Ph.D., of Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

I am not sure of where he got his information, but personally I have only talked to one doctor who was willing to write a prescription for anything other than Levothyroxine. I am far from alone. I have talked to many with thyroid disease who have had the same experience! I had to beg my former doctor to let me try Armour Thyroid! The next doctor I saw cut that prescription by a third because she said my TSH was too low, even though my symptoms were well controlled.

The only doctor that listened was my functional medicine doctor. I first time I met with him, he asked how I was feeling and after answering a few questions for him, he immediately increased my prescription by a third. That increase was enough to ease most of my symptoms. I thank God for for his understanding and care!
