A sunscreen chemical is being linked to serious health problems. Once again we have a news story about companies adding harmful chemicals to products they are telling us to use everyday.
The chemical is called Oxybenzone, and new research shows the chemical could cause skin allergies, thyroid issues and even cancer.
Sunscreen makers have been using it in their products since the 1980s.
Oxybenzone absorbs UV rays so putting it in sunscreen protects your skin from sunburn and long-term sun damage, but researchers recently discovered it’s being absorbed in your bloodstream and causing health issues. Since, this dangerous chemical has been around since the 1980s, I can’t help but wonder why we are suddenly looking into problems it is causing by adding it to sunscreen. My first thought is that the testing process its self is more sophisticated which allows researchers to uncover how toxic these chemicals really are for us, which is great. Now, we can avoid products that contain this chemical.
Right now, dermatologists want young children and pregnant women to especially avoid using sunscreens with Oxybenzone.
Please pass this information on to people you know with young children and expectant mothers, we all know how thyroid problems can affect the health and development of our children.
