Thyroid stem cell research is helping those who have lost their thyroid due to cancer. Thyroid cancer is on the rise and more people are living without a thyroid. The good news is that there is promising research that will enable a thyroid patient to restore their thyroid function through cell-based regenerative therapy. Although drugs are available to replace thyroid function, with this new discovery, “we can now envision that thyroid function could be restored by transplanting patients’ own thyroid cells,” This new research is also helping children born with congenital hypothyroidism. I think this is awesome.

This is sad, but the doctor behind the above thyroid stem cell research was killed in a bicycle accident, however her research paper on growing thyroid cells will still be published. The paper describes, in effect, nature’s recipe for growing a thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that can speed up or slow down your bodily functions.
